Today’s Headlines

Iran shot down a US drone

Early this morning, Iran shot down a $220 million US unmanned vehicle between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. These planes generally have no offensive capability, but they do provide US forces with detailed images of potential targets. The attack is almost sure to raise tensions, and we don’t yet know how the plane was outfitted. “There could always be super secret spy tech onboard that we don’t know about,” a policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations told WIRED.

Apple recalls MacBook Pro batteries

Do you have a 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display that was sold between September 2015 and February 2017? Good news: Apple is replacing the batteries for free on eligible laptops! Bad news: It’s because the batteries “may overheat and pose a fire safety risk.” It’s not exactly the first recall the “world’s best pro notebook” has had, but it is the first time we’ve heard about these laptops potentially catching on fire.

Cocktail Conversation

We’ve all been told “cutting the cord” would be great. But to do that, we needed to subscribe to multiple streaming services, all at various costs. Now the subscriber model is coming for gamers. While Microsoft and Sony have offered subscriber services to the gaming community for more than a decade, other platforms are getting in on the action. The thing that will really complicate gaming services is the array of offerings within each offering. Gamers will be faced with more choices than most of their games will have, and may have to spend just as much time choosing the right service as they will using it.

WIRED Recommends: Brim 8-Cup Pour-Over Coffee Maker

Want a barista-style brew, but don’t want to leave the house? For $180, you can! This machine does a great job at making damn fine coffee that nails the right time and temperature for the perfect cup of joe. But our reviewer says it doesn’t do well with anything under half a pot, so this may be best for bigger households (or true coffee addicts).
